Remembering those we’ve lost in Portage County

Since Rev. Kevin Michael Horak began serving The Church in Aurora in 1981, he performed 499 baptisms, 489 confirmations, 547 weddings, 358 sermons and 505 funerals, as well as constructed several programs for youths and adults, including an intergenerational and leadership development program, the first of its kind at the church.  

Aurora City Council on Feb. 26 granted a four-year, $200,000 tax credit to Atlas Cinema Barrington LLC, which is soon to open a 10-screen movie theater in Barrington Plaza.

The Kent business community is coming together in solidarity to help one of its own.

I recently had the opportunity to speak with a local group of Public Employee Retirees who had invited me to speak on “Aging in Portage County Today.” They also invited my husband, Allen, to come and share information about the Medical Guardian Program, which he coordinates for the Auxiliary of University Hospitals Portage Medical Center in Ravenna.

Mogadore Village Council will be bringing legislation to take bids for the replacement of water lines, sanitary sewer lines and new pavement for sidewalks for the Herbert Street extension between Marion Avenue and Meadowridge Road and also for Meadowridge Road from Herbert Street south to the Springfield Township line.

A Portage County judge has dealt a blow to Kent’s housing code, calling at least part of it “unconstitutional.” This time, the target is a prohibition against landlords renting to more than two unrelated people.

Effective in March, Kent City Council meetings will be held at 7 p.m. instead of 7:30 p.m. the third Wednesday of each month. Council enacted the change Feb. 21, reasoning that it would alleviate confusion over when meetings start: its committee meetings start at 7 p.m. the first Wednesday of each month.

Poised to disband the Kent Architectural Review Board on Feb. 21, city council instead unanimously decided to further debate the matter.

Kent is poised to disband the city’s Architectural Review Board, in past years a source of consternation to some local entrepreneurs. Formal debate on the matter will begin during council’s regular meeting at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 21.

Many community-minded people live in Charlestown. I’d like to introduce you to one. Gary Hunsicker is currently vice-president of the Friends of West Branch State Park. This nonprofit, volunteer-powered group works to help preserve West Branch State Park and enhance the camper experience.
