Cuts across the University Hospitals system have hit Portage County once again, with the recent announcement that UH Portage will no longer provide labor and delivery services after Nov. 12.

State Route 261 in Kent and Franklin Township was constructed in the 1960s to be part of a larger freeway system that was never built. Now, the “highway to nowhere,” as some locals call it, is a physical barrier between downtown Kent to the north and residents living to the south.

Jeanette and Jim Doerfler hosted a picnic for former classmates at their home in Streetsboro. The event was to welcome former Ravennan Donna Bocanelli Snyder for a visit from her home in Reno, Nev. Donna flew in with her daughter, Carol, to visit with sister-in-law Lena Bocanelli for a week.

Streetsboro city leaders got the green light Monday to rehab state Route 43 between Market Square Drive/Cecil Drive and Frost Road. The cost of the project to the city is estimated at $650,939.

The League of Women Voters of Kent will hold its up-close candidate forum, Face 2 Face, from 9-11:30 a.m. Oct. 8 at Kent United Methodist Church, 1435 E. Main St.

As part of Streetsboro’s Bicentennial Celebration, the Streetsboro United Methodist Church held its Aug. 28 service at the original Methodist church building now located at Hale Farm and Village in Bath.

That’s what I thought as I watched former Ohio State star wide receiver Garrett Wilson make the winning touchdown catch for the New York Jets with 25 seconds left in the game to cap a frantic 14-point rally in the final two minutes Sept. 18 in Cleveland.

All that construction at the corner of Tallmadge Road and 43 in Brimfield is just the tip of an ambitious iceberg. What township trustees have in mind is a town center complex that will incorporate athletic fields, the new Portage County District Library branch on Kelso Road, Kelso House, and a large pavilion for family and community events.
