A dystopia is an anti-utopia, the opposite of an ideal community; it’s an extremely alarming situation or a complete breakdown of society. Often in novels such a scenario is postapocalyptic; it springs up after a catastrophically destructive disaster or apocalypse. I’ve been looking at several novels set in such conditions, and I found two recent examples that have good, solid storylines.

This month, I’d like to use this space to focus on folks in Portage County dedicated to serving students in their communities experiencing food insecurity.

The Portage County Emergency Management Agency and the American Red Cross were prompt in reaching out to victims of the April 17 tornado that took Windham by surprise.

Repeating its 3-2 vote of April 23, Kent’s Planning Commission on May 14 approved a conditional use certificate for a 72-bed assisted living facility and 38 independent living units to be built at 1541 S. Water St.

If you and your family live in or near Kent, you’ll be happy to know that the city has a lot planned for this summer. From May into September, there are plenty of experiences waiting for you and your family to find them.

Raw sewage in yards, culverts and open ditches. Nonexistent and failed septic systems. That’s been life in Ravenna Township’s Chinn Allotment, but the state EPA says those days are soon over: It’s time for a sanitary sewer system.

Charlestown will observe Memorial Day on Sunday, May 26 with the annual parade and service at the cemetery.

A meeting was held April 30 in the Ravenna High School auditorium regarding the upcoming building of a sewer system in the Chinn Allotment. A representative from Portage County Water Resources explained to the Chinn Allotment residents how the project is going to unfold and the associated costs with it, much of which will come from the residents’ pockets.

Southeast Music Boosters will be hosting a car show from 4 to 6 p.m. Saturday, May 25 in the high school parking lot. There will be a DJ, food, live performances from the jazz band and swing choir, vendors and trophies. All proceeds benefit all of the music students, kindergarten through 12th grade.

Kent Community TimeBank is offering a series of Repair Cafes, each one dedicated to providing on-site repairs or teaching people how to repair certain items themselves.

There’s a new addition to Kent’s Heritage Park, and it’s here for the long haul.

Welcome to Part 3 of my 30-year retrospective of my days shoeleathering around Portage County covering high school track & field. I could write a book on these experiences, which cover a period of roughly a decade from the mid-1990s to the early 2000s, but, short of a publishing deal, a few Round Two columns will have to do.
