Michelle Filler, owner of Duke’s Dash N’ Splash at 6948 State Route 303, received a second agricultural exemption certificate from the township on Jan. 10, specifically for the purpose of constructing a 60-by-100-foot building for her business.

Streetsboro City Council on Jan. 9 put some teeth into its noise ordinance, adding significant fines and possible jail time.

Aurora Mayor Ann Womer Benjamin on Jan. 13 announced that the Aurora Police Department has been awarded a $55,092 grant to outfit its officers with 35 new body-worn cameras.

A judge has ordered a sheriff’s sale for the tower under construction at the corner of Franklin and Erie streets in Kent after a dispute between the owner and a crane rental firm that claims over $90,000 in unpaid bills.

Thomas Hardesty was re-elected. Mayor Rick Patrick appointed council members to their roles for the year. All of Mayor Patrick’s appointments were approved by roll call.

The meeting was called to order by Mayor Bertram at 7 p.m. with a moment of silent prayer/meditation, followed by the Pledge of Allegiance. Chris Szell was unanimously chosen to retain the position of council president.

Legislation was passed that is going to repave some of the streets in Ravenna. A Surface Transportation Block grant from the Akron Metropolitan Area Transportation Study will pay for 80% of the project.

The city has four car washes and 10 places where people might find a bed. Compare that with five car washes in Kent, four in Brimfield, three each in Ravenna and Aurora, and one each in Mantua, Windham and Garrettsville.

CARE (Children Always Resisting Enemies) of Portage County is looking for donations and especially needs a bus or large (15-passenger) van for transportation.

Several recent books give us characters we can follow from childhood to maturity, letting us really get to know them.

I have always admired and respected how trustees and residents of Freedom Township honor their heritage and historic buildings — and how they support, create and involve themselves in community events. For me, they are THE MODEL for townships and trustee governance.
