Following my column last month, I received a phone call from Chris Craycroft, executive director of Portage County Parks. She reminded me that our county parks system does offer a few hiking excursions which are geared for our senior neighbors. Twice a month, they offer “Senior Hikes” at local parks that are ADA accessible. These are slower-paced walks appropriate for all ages, plus a park staff member always accompanies the group.

Aurora’s annual Fourth of July celebration will take place Tuesday, July 4. The festivities will include a 5-kilometer run, parade, festival and fireworks display.

Rootstown is in the process of improving its two parks, Rootstown Township Park and Gracie Fields. The township will use federal grant money it received to put a sewer through Township Park by the pavilion so it can install restrooms.

An Aurora-based trucking supply company is no longer pursuing acquisition of 15.5 acres at 200 W. Williams St. in Kent, the real estate firm listing the property said Friday.

The Vietnam Traveling Memorial Wall has arrived in Aurora and is on display in Hartman Park, located at 305 Townline Rd. The wall opened for public viewing June 22 and will remain open through Sunday, June 25.

When I was switched from covering Ravenna High School athletics to the Kent Roosevelt beat in 1996, one of my early assignments was to write a story about the Rough Riders’ newly hired boys basketball coach.

The Rev. Carl Kish is being honored with a retirement reception on Sunday, June 25, beginning with celebration of Mass at 11 a.m. at St. Robert Bellarmine Church in Cortland. The reception will follow from noon to 4 p.m. After 61 years as a priest in the Diocese of Youngstown, Rev. Kish is retiring on July 1. Friends and former parishioners are all invited to attend.

The head of a local nonprofit animal rescue is facing what could be multiple charges of animal cruelty after agents found 146 dead dogs at her home in Mantua Township.

The Kent City School District has named Tom Larkin as its new superintendent, promoting him from his current position as assistant superintendent and director of personnel for Kent City Schools.

Many of you might have noticed the new military banners as you drive through the town center. The township would love to know of other veterans and have a banner made for them as well.

The Portage County Solid Waste Management District will make its last scheduled Kent rounds this week and pick up residents’ recycling bins immediately after emptying them. Republic Services, which already provides trash collection to Kent, will begin dispersing its recycling totes this week and assures residents that its collection days will remain the same.

Each day I am bombarded with messages “vote yes for Issue 1!” Are we to vote stupidly in August because we might vote stupidly in November? Must we diminish the strength of our votes to protect ourselves from ourselves? An August bogeyman will defend us from a November one?
