The 14th Annual Kent Blues Fest presented by Wayside Furniture takes place Saturday, July 15, offering free live music by more than 40 acts at 27 venues throughout Kent. The all-day music extravaganza starts at 1 p.m. and goes until after midnight at restaurants, bars, bookstores and outdoor parks.

Early voting starts July 11 at the Portage County Board of Elections, 449 S. Meridian St., Ravenna. On Aug. 8, Election Day, polls will be open from 6:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m.

Another July 1 came and went last Saturday. Eighteen of them now since July 1, 2005, the day my dad died of a massive heart attack at my parents’ home in Mogadore.

Kent resident Chad Schrack is in the midst of a 60-to-70-day kayaking trip down the Mississippi River, his latest feat to raise awareness and donations for colorectal cancer since his wife Sheila was diagnosed in 2006. 

Brimfield police are looking for whoever stole a Ford F-150 pickup belonging to the township fire department at about 3 p.m. July 3.

The annual Ravenna Area Chamber of Commerce “Only in Ravenna” event will take place downtown on Saturday, July 15. There will be live music, food trucks, DORA drinks and raffle prizes. The organizers are looking for acoustic musicians to perform on the corners of each city block to add to the ambiance and experience.

With the celebration of Independence Day, I am not afraid to admit that our family is patriotic. Our flag flies 24 hours, seven days a week to show gratitude for the freedom that we do not take for granted. I am reminded of a quote by Thomas Jefferson which states, “How little do my countrymen know what precious blessings they are in possession of, and which no other people on earth enjoy!”

What are the hottest solutions in today’s business world? At least one is a revamped version of a strategy that debuted in the 1970s: management by objectives.

The Feb. 9 coroner’s report is brief. Remains belonging to a “John Doe” had been found in the woods by 408 Devon Place, site of University Hospitals medical facilities and a nearby Bob Evans restaurant. No trauma or suspected cause of death could be identified.

Two Kent landlords are challenging the city’s laws that limit who may occupy a single-family rental unit, arguing that the city is violating residents’ constitutional rights.

Several citizens raised their personal concerns about the project at Geauga Lake. Some are residents of the area, while others are trustees from the Geauga Lake Improvement Association.
