President Pro Tem and Ward 2 council member Jack Amrhein was appointed as the mayor of Kent and president of City Council at the regular council meeting on Oct. 15. Amrhein will finish out the remainder of the late Mayor Jerry Fiala’s term.

Outside, our beautiful Windham rural landscape is changing, air is getting colder, nights are getting longer, and the leaves are all changing colors. Proclaiming October as Sustainability Month was one of the late Kent Mayor Jerry Fiala’s last official acts before he passed. The proclamation affirms the city’s commitment to implementing policies and practices designed to preserve and protect the community and underscores council’s April 2023 adoption of a Community Action Plan aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

At the start of the meeting, Erick Ritz was sworn in as a member of Streetsboro’s police department, as well as three part-time firefighters, Patrick Bergen, Jacob Boon and Joshua Strunk. A resolution to recognize Eileen Fitzsimmons for her service to Streetsboro’s community and parks was passed.

A 50th wedding anniversary party was held by Cliff and Denise Soudil on Oct. 4, 2025 – 50 years to the day of their wedding, Oct. 4, 1975.

Appointed as Brimfield’s fiscal officer Aug. 1, Jasmine Golden holds a master’s degree in forensic and fraud accounting and has extensive experience in local government, nonprofit organization and educational accounting.

Books a Go Go will have two more author events coming up, beginning with New York Times best-selling author Misty Wilson from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 18. Her newest title is “Falling Like Leaves,” which is a young-adult romance. Books signed by the author will be available for purchase.

A historic Hiram farmstead is in the process of being revitalized to create a community-oriented volunteer education center. The center will feature instruction on eco-friendly living and will include hands-on programs on topics like growing heirloom apples, nut trees and other fruit crops, as well as making apple cider.

Staff members from Portage Soil and Water Conservation and Portage Parks have shared that it is important to monitor what is happening with zoning in your community because your input is important. In Randolph, there will be a public zoning meeting at 6:30 p.m. Oct. 9 at the Randolph Senior Center.

A handful of seniors attended the Senior Forum on Sept. 11 at University Hospitals Portage Medical Center in Ravenna. This program was sponsored by Portage County Job and Family Services.
