There is a family claiming a loved one of theirs was laid to rest in the mausoleum at Grandview Cemetery in 2015 and wants to know the location of the loved one’s remains. Superintendent Ray Taylor has been unsuccessful in locating any records of the deceased but is working to get the family answers. Taylor indicated he has been working on locating the individual for years.

Portage County commissioners last week approved a $411,886 contract to purchase 124 body cams and 30 in-car camera systems for the sheriff’s office.

The Portage County Treasurer’s Office and three local banks are partnering on a $2 million discount loan program to benefit homeowners making energy efficiency improvements, small businesses seeking to create or retain jobs, and family farms that need cost-effective ways to manage expenses.

Last month, a Portage County Sheriff’s deputy shot and killed a Windham women who had allegedly entered a neighbor’s garage with a gun.  A Garrettsville police officer responding to the incident captured a lot of what unfolded on the scene because he was equipped with a body camera.  Unfortunately, some details remain unnecessarily murky, because our Sheriff’s office has not yet acquired body camera equipment.  

To raise awareness of opportunities to learn more about the meaning of Juneteenth, past and present, the Kent InterFaith Alliance (KIFA) for Racial Reconciliation and Justice has compiled a list of Kent area houses of worship that will be honoring the significance of the Juneteenth holiday during their worship on June 19. 

I take this opportunity to respond to a June 6th letter to the editor regarding the Memorial Day party at Plum Creek Park.

Three 2022 graduates of Roosevelt High School can take some extra book money with them to college this fall, thanks to each winning a Kent Lions Club John Ferlito Memorial Scholarship.

Franklin Township residents will see their leaves collected again this fall thanks to a newly signed — and more expensive — agreement between the township trustees and the county recycling center.

The Theodore Roosevelt High School class of 1972 celebrated its 50th reunion June 10-12 by touring the high school building, paying respects to deceased classmates, and enjoying a reception and dinner, among other functions held over the weekend.

The 27th Annual Kent Heritage Festival will kick off at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 2. After the event was canceled in 2020 and scaled back significantly in 2021, this year’s event will be smaller than those in previous years. 

Ravenna and Portage County together on Main Street in downtown Ravenna to showcase artists in the community on Saturday, June 11. Lined up along the blocked-off street, artists sold their work ranging from paintings to sculptures to quilt making to jewelry.

An electric vehicle charging station is coming soon to Garrettsville. There was an idea to memorialize Tom Collins because of his work for the EV station. There were no objections to this.
