I saw some readers commenting about their subscriptions to commercial newspapers, and wanted to share that the Kent Free Library subscribes to America’s News, a database that provides digital access to past and current issues of over 3,500 American newspapers.

In a project that involved over 1,500 Kent State students and dozens of volunteers, 18 quilted art pieces are now on sale to benefit a community center in one of Portage County’s historically impoverished communities.

The dispatch center at the Portage County Sheriff’s Office could double in size, expanding from four to eight consoles, under an $800,000 plan the office proposed during the Sept. 1 county commission meeting. 

County commissioners on Thursday unanimously approved a $154,375 loan to the Portage County Regional Airport Authority for critical repairs, which will add to the $523,059 the airport already owes the county government.

Since I was a kid, I have always been fascinated with the Byers’ Castle on Prospect Street in Ravenna. My friends and I made up all kinds of stories about the Castle and dreamed of getting inside.

A bridge on Newton Falls Road has been out since September 2021, but good news is just around the corner.

After narrowly passing a landmark levy, the Portage County District Library is expanding services throughout Portage County and will soon open a new branch in Brimfield in partnership with the township.

Each year, the community-boosting nonprofit Celebrate Portage! hosts an awards dinner to celebrate individuals and organization that work to improve Portage County.

Twenty years ago, it would have been difficult to fathom things like the College Football Playoff, Name Image Likeness, the transfer portal, and the Big Ten and SEC devouring the Big 12 and Pac-12.

During our careers, teachers earned less than other occupations with the promise from the State Teachers Retirement System (STRS) that we would receive adequate retirement and an annual cost of living allowance. STRS has not kept its promise claiming they do not have available funds to meet its mandated payments.

We subscribed for decades to both the Record-Courier and the Beacon Journal. We enjoyed reading the print edition during breakfast and appreciated the combination of local, regional, national and international news.
