The owner of a Ravenna tactical supply equipment company has died, leaving city leaders to wrestle with paperwork.

There are some things I miss about working in the sports department of a daily newspaper: Friendships. Camaraderie. And stopping everything we were doing — no matter how swamped we were or how close to deadline — to watch the Jack Link’s Beef Jerky “Messin’ with Sasquatch” commercials on the office television.

Skeels-Mathews Community Center will dedicate a shelter in memory of the late Sara Jackson at 10:30 a.m. Oct. 7 at the center at 4378 Skeels St. in Ravenna.

The National Council of Juvenile and Family Court Judges has selected Portage County Juvenile Court as one of 11 Implementation Sites in the entire country. Such sites are committed to developing and implementing judicially-led collaboratives meant to implement systemic change in court cases involving child abuse and neglect.

While it is still nice out, why not take some time and explore one of our county parks. From an article in a recent newsletter from the Portage Park District: “Parks and trails support mental and physical health. Spending time in nature helps to reduce anxiety, stress, depression and symptoms of ADHD.”

Rising above Nelson Circle is a monument dedicated to the memory of township soldiers who long ago served their country. A local history buff is working to make sure those men are remembered forever.

The groundbreaking for Streetsboro’s new city center infrastructure project took place Sept. 21. There will be a splash park, an inclusive playground, restrooms and a new City Hall.

The Randolph Lions Club will host its annual candidates night at 7 p.m. Sept. 25 at the Randolph Township Community Center, behind the Randolph Fire Station at 1639 Route 44.

A former Kent teacher says the school district did not follow its own rules for not renewing his contract. Kent City School District disagreed, and the case has now reached the Ohio Supreme Court.

Brad Cromes, Portage County’s treasurer since 2015, has resigned his post, with one contingency.

I hadn’t planned on writing Artificial Turf Part Two this week – until I saw this comment by The Portager reader Matt S.:

“It seems like artificial turf also causes cancer.”
